Most Constituencies Have Yet To Hold 'friends Of The Environment' Activities

LANGKAWI, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is asking all members of parliament to implement Rakan Alam Sekitar (Friends of the Environment) activities to create public awareness on environmental conservation in their respective areas. Its deputy minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said to date only Maran, Langkawi and a few parliamentary constituencies in Sabah and Sarawak had launched their Rakan Alam Sekitar programmes.

"We find that many parliamentary areas have yet to organise such programmes and we hope all MPs will speed it up so that the people right from the grassroot level will together share the responsibility of caring for the environment," he said after launching a Rakan Alam Sekitar seminar for the Langkawi constituency, here, Monday.

Kurup said the programme must be implemented in all 222 parliamentary areas as each area was given an allocation of RM30,000 by his ministry to implement it.He said the Rakan Alam Sekitar set-up in each parliamentry area would be chaired by the MP and the representatives from the Department of Environment or the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) would be appointed to the secretariat.

"Representatives of the local authorities, non-governmental bodies, resident associations and individuals chosen by the MP will also be on the committee," said Kurup. He said the setting up of Rakan Alam Sekitar since last June was a government effort to provide information on environmental issues and to increase public awareness on the importance of protection and conserving the environment.-- BERNAMA

Anaklangkawi ;-
I'm proud to know that Parlimen Langkawi is among the earliest to conduct Rakan Alam Sekitar programme.
